As someone who has only recently started playing games in the Xbox ecosystem, there have been a lot of games that I have missed playing over the years.
Halo, Gears of War, Fable, even most of the Rare games, have evaded being played by me, due to me not having an Xbox in the past. So when I bought an Xbox One earlier this summer, I decided to play the games I have been missing out on.
Gears of War was one of the many franchises that have always interested me while not having an Xbox. As a game series that has influenced the way third-person shooters have been played since last generation, I was interested in what the series had to offer. And with the Backwards Compatibility of the Xbox One, I had the opportunity to check it out.
I decided to play through the entire Gears of War franchise in a row, and boy, I was impressed. While the visuals of the games didn’t necessarily hold up compared to what I was used to today, the incredible gameplay held up incredibly. The "stop-and-pop" gameplay that has since then influenced many of the games released since then was so fun, that it felt more like a combination of a puzzle game mixed with a third person shooter
The ways maps were laid out encouraged many ways to complete them. The witty banter between the intentionally stereotypical macho dude-bros had me laughing throughout a surprisingly deep story. All of these elements came together to make an incredibly fun and memorable experience playing the entire series.
But this article is supposed to be why I am excited about Gears of War 4. Why am I talking about the games of the series past? Well, it is because of the past that I am excited for the future of the series.
Proposed as a soft-reboot for the series, Gears of War 4 developer, The Coalition, has promised to make Gears of War 4 a game that feels and plays like a Gears of War game from the past. While there will be things introduced in the series that will shake up the story and gameplay formula, it is very important that a well known franchise keeps that feeling that made it so special in the first place.
Remember Star Wars: The Force Awakens? This movie started a new chapter in a well loved franchise, while also making sure that the feeling and whimsy that the original stories created were still there. From everything I have seen so far of Gears of War 4, this is the care and thought I see going into this new entry in a beloved franchise.
Sometimes, more of the same, but a little different, can be a delightful formula to reinvigorate a franchise. Keeping something fresh while also trying to do a few new things along the way.
This is why I am excited for Gears of War 4. New faces, new weapons, new enemies, old faces, same Gears. Here's hoping that Gears of War 4 keeps this Force Awakens feeling it is giving off, and I know that I will love it if it does.
